PROVINCE SWEPT BY STORM
Wintry Conditions Return
Southland has experienced an unwelcome return of wintry and stormy conditions during the last few days. Yesterday the province was swept with heavy rain and sleet showers and a strong south-westerly wind, while the temperature was unduly low for the time of the year. Some of the heaviest showers of rain for months were experienced in the city yesterday morning, but they were not of long duration. Before last week-end rain was badly needed in most districts, but showers not accompanied by cold and boisterous conditions would have been more welcome. The effect on garden crops will be serious except in the most sheltered areas, and those persons with gardens in forward condition will suffer disappointment. It is considered unlikely that stock will be seriously affected. Even in the back country lambing is now over and the young lambs should be sufficiently sturdy to stand the blast of the storm.
