BLUFF NEWS
NATIONAL SAVINGS.— The flag was at the top of the mast again on Saturday, indicating that Bluff had once again attained its weekly quota towards National Savings. RATION BOOKS— About half the number of ration books to be issued have been collected at the Post Office. Friday was the busiest day of the week, 350 being issued on that day.
COLLECTION OF RAGS— During the week Bluff Sea Rangers and Girl Guides will make a house-to-house collection of clean cotton rags. These will be sorted and sent to headquarters in Invercargill, whence they will be forwarded for use as cleaning rags for the Army, Navy and Air Force. E.P.S. PICTURES— On Thursday E.P.S. pictures will be shown at the Town Hall at 3 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. These pictures are instructive and informative to E.P.S. personnel and the public and it is hoped that as many as possible will attend. Admission will be free. CHIMNEY ON FIRE— The Bluff Fire Brigade received a call to the Club Hotel on Monday evening when a chimney was on fire. It was soon brought under control. BOTTLE COLLECTION— As a result of the bottle drive by the Bluff school children about 5000 bottles were collected, realizing the sum of £l9/10/8. This will be used towards soldiers’ parcels from the children. PERSONAL.— Captain Bevan, the newly-appointed second pilot to the Bluff Harbour Board, has arrived in Bluff.
Captain J. Callan and Mrs Callan left on Tuesday for their new home in Timaru. Before his departure for Timaru, where he has been appointed harbourmaster, Captain Callan was met by the staff of the Bluff Harbour Board. After congratulating him on his appointment Captain N. W. Haszard presented him, on behalf of the staff, with a teaset and wished Captain Callan and Mrs Callan and their sons success in the future. Other speakers were Messrs R. N. Porter, W. F. Cameron, H. Newman and D. E. S. Mason.
