PRISON SENTENCES

SUBVERSIVE STATEMENTS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 27. Remarking that he supposed he would have to make a guess at the duration of the war, Mr Justice Blair in the Supreme Court sentenced Ormond Edward Burton, chairman of the Christian Pacifist Society and a former minister of religion, to two and a-half years’ reformative detention. Burton had been found guilty by a jury of editing the bulletin of the society with a view to facilitating the publication of a subversive statement. Mr Justice Blair said his guess might be wrong, but if some wizard could tell him the war would finish in six months he would impose a six months’ sentence. If peace came before the expiration of the sentence the Prisons Board would be recommended to release Burton.

A year’s hard labour, to be followed by 18 months’ reformative detention, was imposed on Harold William Klein, for having in his possession certain documents with a view to making or facilitating the publication of a subversive statement. The Judge said he would make a recommendation to the Prisons Board that Klein be released earlier if an armistice was signed.
