JAPANESE ELUDED

Catholic Missionaries In

Wellington

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 27. Catholic missionaries who left Guadalcanar only 23 days ago after being hunted through the jungle by the Japanese today participated in offering Solemn Requiem Mass at St. Mary of the Angels for their fellow missionaries who were murdered. The Mass was offcred for two Marist priests, Fathers Duhamel, of the United States, and Engerbrink, of the Netherlands, and two missionary sisters of the Society of Mary, Sisters Sylvia and Odilia. They were killed on Guadalcanar by the Japanese about six weeks ago. The celebrant of the Mass was Father Brugmans, of the Netherlands, who has been 15 years in the Solomons. The deacon was Father D. Scanlan, of Wellington, who has been seven years in the Solomons and the subdeacon. Father MacMahon, of Canada, who has been three years there. Also present were two Marist lay brothers who accompanied the priests from Guadalcanar. They were Brother George, an Australian, who was trained at Greenmeadows and has been 25 years in the islands, and Brother Michael, an Englishman, who was born in India and trained at Highden and has been eight years in the islands. A large body of Wellington clergy and representatives of the various religious communities were present with a full congregation of laity.
