Sporting DOUBLE ACK’S WIN AT GORE

Bashful Lady Scores Easily Wintry’ weather did not keep the public away from the spring meeting of ■ the Gore Racing Club on Saturday, and although the gate receipts showed a slight drop compared with the receipts for the first day of last year’s _ spring meeting, there was a big crowo, including large contingents of racegoers from Dunedin and Invercargill. The totalizator, worked under the new management for the first time in Southland, showed an increased turnover, the figures for Saturday being £21,426 compared with £20,071 on the first day last year. The abolition of preliminaries to the races, brought about by the bad weather, probably contributed much to the expedition with which the totalizator staff, headed by Mr G. Wilhelmson, handled the big turnover. Waste time was eliminated and the programme completed well up to time, a state of affairs greatly appreciated by the public, the majority of which travelled to and from the course by train. It was an excellent introduction to Southland courses for the new totalizator management. The racing was interesting on a track which had been thoroughly soaked by heavy rain and a light fail of snow and sleet. It soon cut up. Doubleack, winner of two Wyndham Cups and a Dunedin Cup, won the President’s Handicap and showed that he could still gallop in heavy going. The withdrawal of two of the ante-post favourites, Night Pal and Anglo-Irish, and the break-down during the race of Strip, favourite for the race, robbed the event of much of its interest. Tissue appeared to be a certainty beaten. She struck trouble in the running and unwound a run which went very close to giving her the race. It was the third time she had been beaten into second place over a mile and a quarter. The highlight of the programme was the five-horse Stewards’ Handicap in which Bashful Lady, carrying 9.5, showed a clean pair of heels to the others and once again proved her outstanding ability as a galloper. She was given a good reception by the public. Bashful Lady looks like having a great chance of repeating the performance of Alma who won the open sprint at Gore ana then went on and won the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap. She is to be nominated for the latter event. PUKERAU HIGHWEIGHT.— Lady Don made no race of the highweight event once she was taken to the front in the straight. She handled the wet going with apparent ease. Kept in a handy position throughout the race, she was fourth into the straight behind Dark Colleen, Colonel Rouge and Forte (on the outer), and easily headed the leaders in the run to the judge. Gold Nugget, well placed in the early running, dropped back at the straight entrance, but came again and beat Colonel Rouge, who was a poor third after having every chance. Forte showed up at the top of the straight. He stumbled and was almost on his nose when the barrier was released. Light Cavalry and Ageratum followed the first four horses home. SPRING PLATE.— Aramoney and Prince Leighon were badly left at the start and the race was thus robbed of some of its interest. Tea For Two made a good beginning and got a break on the field which was never bridged. The Riverton-trained Salmagundi filly was kept up to her work by K. E. Wilson and won from Night Lancer by a length. Night Lancer was in second position all the way. Cross Question looked to have a chance in the straight, but failed to reach Night Lancer by a length; then came Pianlste six lengths away, Gammer and Help Mate. BALFOUR TROT.— When the field had settled down the order was Vault. Noeleen

Grattan, Popputunoa, Dunstan Direct, Fancy Goods, Victory Boy and Scotch Music. Half a mile from home Gratuity made a run which carried him to the front at the straight entrance, with I’m Sure, Popputunoa and Vault close handy. Then came Aberbond, Fancy Goods, Sea Max and Treivathan. Gratuity went away from the field i and won with three lengths to spare from Popputunoa, who was two lengths in front of Fancy Goods. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP.— A slow pace over the early stages enabled Doubleack to keep with the field, and when the last halfmile was entered upon, he ran to the front and held on under pressure to beat Tissue by a long neck. Gold Flight, always in third or fourth place, finished third half a length away. Taxpayer and Tissue led the field for six furlongs, and along the back Strip, who was racing in fourth place, was pulled up. He bled during the race. Taxpayer, Tissue and Gold Flight followed Doubleack into the straight where Tissue received a check, but she came with a strong run and just failed to get up. She was the unlucky horse of the race. Taxpayer was fourth and Atua Here was next. Fidelis had conditions to suit him but he did not threaten danger at any stage.

WAIMEA HANDlCAP.— Princess Myosotis soon ran to the front and opened up a good lead from Platform, Carolyn and Judy O’Grady. Southern Wave showed up across the top, but Princess Myosotis held her lead into the straight and went on to beat the fast-finishing Platform by three-quarters of a length. Carolyn was a length away third; then came Coy, Judy O’Grady and Lord Midas.

STEWARDS’ HANDICAP.— Winning Flight was slow away, but she was rushed up to the field, and across the top had run to the front from Royal Chorus, Bashful Lady, Spanish Lad and Night Pal. The order of the leaders was unchanged into the straight, and inside the distance Bashful Lady was quickly taken to the front and won with ease by two lengths from Night Pal, who finished well and beat Spanish Lad for second money. Royal Chorus was next and Winning Flight finished last after being made much use of. NOVICE HANDICAP.— From a good start Air Chief and Golden Belie showed out from Maiden’s Money, and racing across the top the order was Air Chief from Maiden’s Money, Royal Brief and Golden Belle together. Maiden’s Mony hit the front at the straight entrance, but both Air Chief and Golden Belle overhauled her and in a blanket finish Air Chief and Golden Belle deadheated, with Maiden’s Money barely half a length awtiy, followed by Sister Sal a neck away in fourth place. Sister Sal put in a strong run from the distance and looked like getting the leaders 50 yards from the post. Royal Brief was fifth.

FAREWELL HANDlCAP.— Macedoing came wtih a wet sail at the finish of the Farewell Handicap and beat Lady Don on the post by a neck. Dark Colleen was a head away third and Gnohill fourth; then came two well-backed horses in Amorlad and Marquee. Gnohill took up the running from Lady Don and Marquee but Lady Don drifted, and across the top the order was Gnohill, Filibeg, Amorlad, Marquee and Lady Don, with Macedoine and Dark Colleen next. Amorlad was first into the straight from Gnohill, Filibeg and Lady Don but failed to hold his run, and Lady Don and Dark Colleen shot to the front. This pair was fighting it out when Macedoine put in her claim on the outer and got up in an exciting finish at the post. It was Macedoine's second win in successive starts for her owner-trainer (Mr R. E. McLellan) and his first winning ride for the apprentice. K. F. Brown. The results were as follows:— PUKERAU HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, £175. Eight furlongs and a-half. 8-8 T. P. Wilson’s br m LADY DON (Roydon-Boherbee), 6yrs, 10.9 (W. Connor) 1 4-5 J. M.
