HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Support Of Education Board The Southland Education Board decided at its meeting yesterday to become a member of the Southland Historical Society. ’ A letter from Mr H. B. Farnall, the city librarian, stated that the committee of the society desired to ascertain whether there was a circle of 500 citizens sufficiently interested in the history of Invercargill and Southland to subscribe to one copy of one or more historical books. If there were not sufficient interest in the scheme the committee would have to abondon the idea of publication. The works contemplated were: "Bloody Jack” (Tuhawaiki), ready for publication; “Kelly of Inverkelly, the story of our First Townsman, blending the Maoris, whalers and immigrants in the founding of Invercargill"; “Citizens of Invercargill. Some 200 biographies”; “Early Invercargill, the History of the Town” and "Early Southland, the History of a Unique Province.”
