Civil Defence Man-Power Problem
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, October 22. Brief but strongly worded criticism of the Government’s delays in dealing with the civil defence man-power problem was uttered by the Mayor, Mr J. A. C. Allum, in opening a conference on fire-watching at the Town Hall. “One of our principal difficulties is over the allocation of man-power,” said Mr Allum. “It is impossible to imagine how this question could have been dealt with in a more unbusinesslike manner than it has been. We realize that men must go to fight. The trouble is that the resulting shortage has not been faced up to. If there are not enough men aged 18 to 65 for civil defence, youths and women will have to act, but the authorities have done nothing about it You can understand how I get a little impatient -.vith the red tape and circumlocution that surrounds what we are trying to do.”
