The Mayor, Mr A. Wa.chner, who is chairman of the executive of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council, and the town clerk, Mr W. F. Sturman, who is honorary secretary, have been appointed to represent the council at a conference of delegates of patriotic councils to be held in Wellington on November 18. \

Mr W. J. Officer, who is in charge of a Y.M.C.A. institution at a northern camp, is at present spending a period of leave in Invercargill. Mr J. H. Reed was reappointed by the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce yesterday as its representative on the executive of the Southland Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs Association. Judge McCarthy, of the Native Land Court, who has been in Invercargill on furlough for the past four months, has left for the north before resuming his official duties.

Flying Officer P. I. Maclean and Pilot Officer R. G. Lund, who will leave Invercargill today for a northern air station, were bidden farewell last night by the Invercargill squadron of the Air Training Corps. Flight-Sergeant C. W. Snow, who made presentations to the two officers on behalf of the cadets, referred to Mi- Maclean’s work as commanding officer of the squadron since its formation, and to Mr Lund’s work as a flight commander. Mr Maclean and Mr Lund replied. A motion thanking Mr W. W. Butchers for the work he had done on behalf of the publicity committee of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council was carried at a meeting of the executive of the council yesterday. Mr Butchers recently resigned from the committee on being called up for military duties. Second Lieutenant P. R. Freyberg, son of Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg, relinquished his commission in the 2nd N.Z.E.F. on March 27 on being appointed to a commission in the Grenadier Guards.—P.A.

R.N.Z.A.F. promotions gazetted last night include Group Captain A. de T. Nevill to be acting air-commodore.— P.A.

The following railway staff changes in Southland are announced, all the officials being stationmasters: —Mr J. Stewart, Waimahaka to Edendale; Mr J. Torrance, Edendale to Riversdale; Mr L. G. Matheson, Riversdale to Thornbury; Mr D. B. Kilgour, Thombury to Waimahaka.
