BLUFF NEWS
PRESENTATION. — Before his departure for camp Mr E. Matheson was met by the members of No. 4 Platoon, Bluff Home Guard, of which he had been sergeant, and presented with a leather writing case. In handing over the gift on behalf of the platoon, Lieutenant P. Moffitt spoke of the keenness and efficiency of Mr Matheson and wished him success in his military career. Corporal T. Edwards spoke of the esteem in which Mr Matheson was held by all members of the platoon. Mr Matheson was also met by members of the Bluff School Committee and presented with a pocket wallet. In making the presentation the chairman, Mr Gavin Muir, wished him luck and a speedy return.
LADIES’ BOWLING CLUB.— The Bluff Ladies’ Bowling Club opened its season in beautiful weather. Mrs A. Vincent, president, welcomed a large gathering of bowlers and visitors. The Mayor declared the green open and Mrs Gavan, treasurer of the centre, rolled the first ball. She was presented by Mrs A. Vincent with a shoulder spray. Mrs Haydon, on behalf of the visitors, thanked the Bluff women for their hospitality.
PATRIOTIC PARCELS.— This week members of the Women’s Patriotic Committee met and made up 36 soldiers’ parcels, these being Bluff's quota towards Southland’s parcels. SOLDIER WELCOMED HOME.— Private J. Kelly, who has returned from the Middle East, was welcomed at the station by the Mayor, Mr N. W. McGorlick, and the town clerk, Mr H. A. Ferguson and friends.
