GORE NEWS

HIGH SCHOOL BOARD Advice that a special grant of £ll2 had been approved to cover the cost of securing 80 tables and chairs from the Otago Education Board for the purpose of replacing the fixed desks in rooms one, two and three at the school was received from the Director of Education at a meeting of the Gore High School Board of Governors yesterday. The rector's report stated that the roll was now 222 compared with 204 for the same period last year. It was hoped to form, under Mr M. Fowler’s leadership, a branch of the Boys' and Girls' Clubs Association at the school, the report stated. Usually

tiie clubs were confined to primary school children, but with the need for greater production it was considered that the scheme could be extended to junior forms in the high school. It was decided to invite LieutenantColonel E. J. Anderson, officer commanding a southern military camp, to be the speaker at the school’s break-up ceremony. The fact that there would be a big demand for youth labour on farms this year was mentioned during a discussion about when the school should close for the Christmas holidays. A suggestion put forward by the rector that the term should close on December 11 was adopted. ROTARY CLUB.— An interesting account of the work of the regiment under his command was given by Lieutenant-Colonel E. J. Anderson during an address to yesterday's meeting of the Gore Rotary Club. Lieutenant-Colonel Anderson thanked the

people of Gore for the consideration extended to officers and men during the temporary camp at the Gore racecourse. GOLF.—A fair field, including a number of soldiers, took part in a Stableford match conducted by the Gore Golf Club on its Croydon links. The winner of the match was C. W. Adamson, with a net score of 35, W. F. Young being runner-up with 33.

A foursomes match played by members of the Gore Ladies' Golf Club resulted in a win for Mesdames J. P. Steans and G. R. Martin on the count back from Mrs A. Hain and Miss J. Perry. PERSONAL.—Mr F. Young, of Alexandra, is visiting Gore.
