No-Confidence Debate (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 16. The Opposition’s no-confidence motion was defeated in the House of Representatives by 47 votes to 17 and the Prime Minister’s amendment was carried, the voting being the same. The divisions were as follows:— For the Opposition Motion.— Acland, Bodkin, Broadfoot, Cobbe, Doidge, Forbes, Goosman, Gordon, Grigg, Harker, Holland, Kidd, Polson, Ransom, Roy, W. Sullivan, Sutherland. Against the Motion.—Anderton, Armstrong, Atmore, Barrell, Boswell, Clyde Carr, P. Carr, Chapman, Coates, Coleman, Combs, Cotterill, Cullen, Denham, Dreaver, Fraser Frost, Hamilton, Jones, Kyle, Lowry, McCombs, McKeen, McMillan, Mason, Massey, Meachen, Moncur, Munro, Neilson, O’Brien, Nordmeyer, Osborne, Paikea, Parry, Petrie, Richards, Roberts, Robertson, Schramm, Semple, Stewart, D. G. Sullivan, Thorne, Webb, Wilkinson, Williams. Pairs.—For the motion: Dickie, Endean, Ngata. Against; Barley, Martin, Hodgens. During the closing stages of the debate in the early hours of this morning the Hon. Adam Hamilton expressed disappointment at the collapse of the War Administration which he said had done good work. Would an election clear the air? he asked. He did not think it would. The only way to bring about sound, war administration was for the leaders to get-together and settle their differences. He asked the Prime Minister if the amendment asked for a vote of confidence in the Government. The Rt. Hon. P. Fraser replied that the amendment did not involve the question of confidence; it referred entirely to the war effort. Mr J. N. Massey (Nat., Franklin) said he had been astounded when the Opposition Ministers withdrew from the War Administration because while he thought the strike had been handled badly, he considered the course taken was the only possible one.
