SHORTAGE OF LIME
Rationing System To Continue Because of the difficulty in securing more labour for lime works in Otago and Southland, it will be necessary to continue with the present system of rationing. This was decided upon at a meeting at Gore yesterday of representatives of Southland and Otago lime companies, merchants and representatives of production councils when the lime situation in South Otago and Southland was discussed. It was stated at the meeting that the present shortage could be met to a very large extent by the provision of more labour at the works, but that it appeared to be impossible to get more labour. The rationing system provides for 1| tons of lime an acre for new grass and scwt an acre for other crops. This will be the basis of allocation from southern lime works until the end of the year. The main discussion at the meeting centred in next year’s allocation. It was decided that all farmers should be required to fill in a form showing the area of land to be limed next year, both for cropping and top-dressing. These order forms will have to be returned to merchants or lime companies by November 21, when an allocation will be made for all next year’s supplies based on the requirements of individual fanners and the amount of lime which the lime companies can produce during that period.
