The Rev. C. J. Tocker at present moderator of the Presbytery of Southland, has been unanimously nominated as moderator designate of the Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand for 1943. Air Commodore H. V. Goddard, Chief of Staff of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, has returned to the Dominion from the United States.—P.A. The Rev. D. E. Duncan, 8.A., of Lumsden, has been chosen by the Assembly Chaplains’ Committee and approved by the Presbytery of Southland as an overseas chaplain. Squadron Leader C. C. N. Johnston, chief administrative officer, Air Training Corps, Headquarters, Wellington, arrived in Invercargill yesterday on a brief visit and is staying at the Grand Hotel. He will return north by this afternoon’s train. The Rev. D. H. Hay, 8.A., of Oreti, tendered his resignation because of illhealth at a meeting of the Southland Presbytery. It was accepted, regret being expressed by the parish representatives and the presbytery. Leading Aircraftman J. Elliotte, a member of the literary staff of The Southland Daily News, who is at present on leave, was met on Thursday by the combined staffs. Mr A. C. Perrin, sub-editor, presented him with a gift on behalf of his fellow employees and extended best wishes for his career in the R.N.Z.A.F. Good wishes were also expressed by representatives of the various departments. Before leaving Otautau to join up with the Air Force, Mr J. H. Geddes, who has been the Otautau agent for the National Mortgage and Agency Co., Ltd., was met by his fellow agents and members of the Home Guard. Mr G. H. Stevens was chairman, and in asking Mr Geddes to accept a leather holdall as a token of esteem hoped he would have a pleasant trip to the other side of the world and that the war would be over before he arrived there. Mr Darcy Kirkland, elder son of Mr and Mrs J. C. Kirkland, Kelvin street, left this week to join the Mercantile Marine. He is one of Southland’s best swimmers, his record including a New Zealand title. At the Southland Boys High School, which he left to go to sea, he was a membei’ of the first fifteen and the school choir. He was accompanied north by his father, who will return to Invercargill on Tuesday. A motion of condolence with the relations of the late Mr C. E. Borne was moved at a meeting of the Bluff U.F.S. Dispensary Committee by Bro. N. W. McGorlick. He expressed appreciation of Mr Borne’s long and faithful service in friendly society work and referred especially to his association with the Bluff Dispensary, for which he had acted as auditor for the past 12 years. The motion was seconded by Bro. G. V. Edge and carried. Sergeant D. E. M. Stewart, a member of the medical platoon of the Home Guard, is attending a course of instruction at the base training depot.
