Mrs T. E. Pennington, Wellington, is visiting Mrs T. Bath, Leet street. Mrs D. Lynch, Nith street, has returned from a visit to Rimu. Mrs M. Fulton, Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs R. Creeser, Avenal Flats. Miss Clarice Stobo has returned to Wellington after a visit to her mother, Mrs J. Stobo, Wellington street. Mrs T. E. Davis, Forth street, will leave early next week to spend a holiday in Auckland. Miss Marjorie Macdonald,. Collingwood, has returned from a visit to her sister, Mrs A. C. Millar, Blenheim. Mrs A. 0. Davies, Dee street, was hostess during the week for Mrs D. Stewart. Mrs C. Gilman, Thames street, was hostess at an afternoon tea party and supper party for Mrs D. Stewart, who is leaving Invercargill. Miss Kathleen Moffett, who has been visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs A. B. Moffett, Gladstone, will return to Christchurch tomorrow night. Miss Jean Waddell, whose marriage took place on Thursday to Leading Aircraftman R. T. Baker, was made presentations by the staff and management of Broad, Small Ltd. Mr E. E. Broad, in making the presentation from the management, spoke of Miss Waddell’s association with the firm and wished her every happiness. There is reported to be a misapprehension over the question of admission to the victory ball to be held in St. Mary’s hall next Tuesday night when the dance orchestra of the Band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force will supply the music. No invitations have been issued and admission will be by ticket or by payment at the door. During the week the women at the Lady Galway Guild rooms were busy making face nets for Home Guardsmen and 72 nets were completed, making a total of 400 to be handed in. This week the women will be sewing the corners of the bags in which the soldiers’ parcels are packed. This is a big job and as many helpers as possible will be required. Red Cross workers are shortly to undertake the making of slippers for soldiers who are convalescing. A pair is at present on display at the depot. They are made of grey flannel lined with red and have feltex soles. A pattern is supplied and as the slippers are easy to make and can be fashioned from scraps, it is expected that there will be many volunteers for the work. A large number of friends met at the home of Mrs C. Austin, a resident of Tuatapere for some 28 years, to say farewell before her departure for Timaru, where she intends to live. Mr F. Harrison expressed regret at Mrs Austin’s departure and wished her better health and many years of happiness in her new home. Mrs Harrison presented the guest with an envelope. Mr J. Stuck replied on behalf of his sister. A successful bring-and-buy sale was held yesterday afternoon by the members of the Southland Women’s Club. Women from the different circles were in charge of the stalls, and the flower stall, with its beautiful array of spring flowers, attracted a good deal of attention. The sum of £35 was raised, and as this is the third sale this year, quite a substantial sum of money has been handed in to the patriotic funds. Members of the North Invercargill branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union sent a very useful parcel of clothing to the Lady Galway Guild rooms yesterday afternoon. From old materials clever fingers had made comfortable clothing for needy children. From adults’ jerseys little frocks had been made, and skirts, coats and suits from garments which had been unpicked and washed. Included in the parcel was a hand-made quilt to be handed to the Y.M.C.A. ENGAGEMENTS Mr and Mrs L. B. Clayton, Queen street, Dunedin, announce the engagement of their only daughter, Margaret Joyce, to William Richardson, only son of Mr and Mrs William R. Mayhew, Rugby street, Invercargill. 4118 The engagement is announced of Leading Aircraftman John Halliday, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. Orr, "Strathmore,” Balfour, to Joan, only daughter of Dr and Mrs Allan Roy, Port Chalmers, Dimedin. The engagement is announced of Rex William, second son of Mr and Mrs William Orr, "Strathmore," Balfour, to Doreen, only daughter of Mr and Mrs G. Caldwell, 55 Harbour Terrace, Dunedin. Miss M. May will give a talk at the annual meeting of the Southland Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association on Thursday, October 17, the subject being “Animals and Poetry.”—Advt. PATRIOTIC NOTES The monthly meeting of the Invercargill Metropolitan Patriotic Committee was held on Thursday afternoon. It was reported that the total number of • comforts dispatched from the depot for the year ended September 30, 1942, were: 2600 scarves, 3037 balaclavas, 4251 pairs of mittens and 1705 pairs of socks. The Lady Galway Guild reported the completion of 350 camouflage nets for the Home Guard and that a further 150 hussifs were ready for dispatch. An appeal for more helpers for the waste paper depot was made by Mrs Abernethy as the need is very acute. Knitted goods have been received from the following:—Spar Bush, Fortrose W.D.F.U., Longbush, South B, Lochiel, Edendale, Balfour W.D.F.U., Isla Bank W.D.F.U., Winton W.D.F.U., Edendale W.D.F.U., Ryal Bush, South A, Kennington, Mossburn (Mrs Dyer), Georgetown, Waianiwa, Tuturau W.D.F.U. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS South A—The committee thanks the following for donations: Fortification Timber Company, £5; household collections for the month, £27/3/-. The following donations of knitted goods are acknowledged with thanks: Four scarves from “Grandmother” and one pair of gloves from Miss Boyce. The committee has handed in to the depot 19 balaclavas, 16 scarves, eight pairs of socks, eight pairs of gloves and four pairs of mittens. The monthly meeting will be held on the last Monday of this month. South B—The committee thanks an anonymous donor for £4. Hawthomdale—The meeting will be held on Monday at 3 p.m. at the Mission Hall. Georgetown—The monthly meeting will be held at the home of Mrs Pasley, Centre street, on Monday at 7.30 p.m. More knitters are urgently wanted and wool is available at Miss Mathieson’s, Rodney street. Avenal-Northend —The committee wishes to thank all those who gave to the monthly collection, together with the comfort coupons, which amounted to £BB/4/10. Gladstone —The committee meeting will be held at the residence of Mrs L. C. Smith, Duke street, on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The committee thanks all those who contributed so liberally to the recent comfort coupons appeal. The collection amounted to £155 6/3. Central—Members of the committee are busy with the monthly collection. The relations afternoon will be held as usual on Monday. RED CROSS NEWS By courtesy of the Invercargill City Council, the local Red Cross Society will hold a street day on Wednesday, November 25. As tills will be an annual fixture, the various town committees will appreciate the opportunity of centralizing their efforts for the occasion. Next week the members of Waikiwi Committee will be In charge of the depot. The members of Central Committee will visit the hospital for sewing. AUXILIARY NOTES Members who have ordered uniforms are asked to call at the office between 10.30 and 11 a.m. today and between 2.30 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Monday to collect them. Military drill will be held in the H. and H. garage on Tuesday at 7 p.m. This is a compulsory parade for all uniformed members. All uniformed members must parade with the Air Force Band at noon on Wednesday. They will fall in in Victoria Avenue by Dee street hospital at 11.50 a.m. A shift from Area 2 will be on duty at the field canteen and on October 17 a shift from area 3. On October 16 area 8 will be on duty at the waste paper depot.
