WINGATUI GALLOPS
Boloyna Reported Ready (Special) DUNEDIN, October 8. Most of the final gallops for the Dunedin meeting on Saturday took place at Wingatui this morning, when conditions were fine overhead. There has, however, been a little more rain than desired and there will have to be very favourable atmospheric conditions before Saturday to harden up the going, but it will not' be heavy. Arrivals overnight were John Gay, Soncy, Lord Advocate, Guardress, St. Cloud and Atreus; Except the last-named tlie others were let off with light tasks. Atreus ran half a mile on the outside of the course proper in 56sec, but was not extended. With the course proper next to the railsopen for two-year-olds, there was added interest in the proceedings. The surface opened up about three inches. Royal Flight began at a canter from the top of the straight and the pace was increased to three-quarter over the final furlong. She takes a big stride for her size and hits out Town Hall, Slipstream and Fairy Godmother began from a standing start at the half-mile. The first-named was pulled up halfway down the straight and the other pair finished together in 53 2-ssec. Town Hall bears a more seasoned appearance, but the Oamaru two-year-olds finished with something in reserve and with no evidence of being green about their task. GOLD FLIGHT FINISHES WELL The most interesting gallop on the outside of the course proper was between Nightcalm, Gold Flight, The Raker and Lord Midas over seven furlongs. The first-named drew well clear early, but Gold Flight and The Raker closed up over tlie last 100 yards. Gold Flight, finishing well, got to within half a length of Nightcalm, who carried a featherweight, with The Raker a length away. Lord Midas could not reach his companions. The time was 1.40 1-5. Boloyna drew up to finish with Taxpayer at the end of seven furlongs run in 1.41 3-5. Boloyna is ready for a winning effort. Forte and Strip went an attractive halfmile in 54 2-5. Desert Maid went smoothly over six furlongs in 1.26 1-5 and Egyptian Rose was doing her best over a similar distance in 1.26. Courtdress and Attorney, the former pleasing most, galloped six furlongs in 1.26 1-5. Damascus and Coy, under restraint, ran half a mile in 56sec. This pair promise to run prominently. On the grass next to the plough Night Pal covered six furlongs in 1.23, but accurate timing on this track is not always possible. After dropping away over the first three furlongs, Alpine drew up to finish with Helpmate and Maiden’s Money over six furlongs on the outside of the course proper. They were - not timed. Lady Don schooled attractively over the hurdles and others worked were Steward, Kohara, Boucant, Pianiste, Jacksonville, Safe Light and Sixpence. COLLEGIATE SWIMMING CLUB The Collegiate Swimming Club successfully opened its season with more than 30 members present. It was decided to change the club hour from 5.45 p.m. to 6.15 p.m. for the convenience of members. It is also being arranged for senior swimmers to each take a proportion of non-swimmers and beginners for special coaching. j
