TO ASSIST SOLDIERS’ WIVES
Domestic Help Scheme A scheme to assist wives of soldiers who are on service, especially in cases where there is sickness in the home, is being undertaken by the Invercargill R.S.A. It is proposed to ask women who are prepared to assist to give their names to Mr W. F, H. Stone, secretary of the association. A register will thus be made and a copy of this will be given to each doctor in the city. Then, if a doctor finds that a soldier’s wife because of sickness in the home is in need of temporary domestic assistance, he will communicate with one of the volunteers. If women who volunteer for this work are not on the telephone they are asked, if possible, to give the number of a friend’s telephone so that a message can/be sent to them with the least possible delay. It may be recalled that early in the war the Invercargill R.S.A. started a scheme of assisting the wives and families of soldiers on service by arranging for attention to gardens. Because of lack of volunteers this scheme has not been in operation for a considerable time. This, it is stated, is not due to any lack of goodwill, but to the fact that with overtime at their own jobs, Home Guard or E.P.S. duties, few men have sufficient spare time to give full attention even to their own gardens. It is thought, on the other hand, that there are women with sufficient spare time to assist in the domestic help scheme. There is evidence that there is need for such a scheme. At a meeting of the executive of the Invercargill R.S.A. this week the president, Dr A. Owen-Johnston, stated that in the course of his duties five cases of soldiers’ wives who were in need of temporary domestic assistance had come to his knowledge. In four of the cases relations had filled the breach, but in tire fifth case there was no one to help.
