Commercial PRICES OF POTATOES
Amendment Announced WELLINGTON, October 8. Recently the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, indicated the prices which would operate from October to February next in respect to new potatoes and from March to June next in respect to main crop potatoes. In the interval prices for new potatoes have been amended somewhat, says a Price Tribunal statement tonight. The tribunal announces that prices to North Island and Nelson Province growers will be £35 a ton for October 1 to 15, £3O from October 16 to 31, £25 from November 1 to 15, £2O from November 10 to 30, £lB in December and £l4 in January and February. Prices to South Island growers, excluding Nelson, will be a maximum of £42/10/- a ton in October and November, £35 in December, £25 in January and £lB in February. In the terms of these growers’ prices the tribunal tonight issued «a price order covering the prices chargeable by the grower, distributor, wholesaler and retailer for new potatoes between October 1 and February 28, 1943. The order provides the following maximum prices to the public for new potatoes: North Island to Nelson Province — October 1 to 15, 6d per lb; October 16 to 31, 5-Jd; November 1 to 15, 4Jd; November 16 to 30, 4d; December, 34d; January and February, 3d. Elsewhere the maximum price will be 7d per lb in October and November, 6d in December, 4Jd in January and 3|d in February. Another order to be issued later, covering the main crop in 1943, will provide retail prices round about l|d per lb in Canterbury and Otago and 2d in shipping ports elsewhere, plus a further farthing in country districts served by such ports. The forty-fourth annual meeting of Scoullar and Chisholm, Ltd., was presided over by Mr A. F. Cheyne, who congratulated shareholders on the result of the year’s working, despite difficult conditions. Sales had increased, both in volume and amount, and careful management had resulted in an increase in the net profit of £524 over the previous year. The directors’ recommendation that a dividend of 5 per cent, be paid on preference shares and 3 per cent, on ordinary shares was passed. The retiring director, Mr J. W. Dove, and the company’s auditors were re-elected.
