GORE NEWS
VISIT OF AIR FORCE BAND During its tours of the Dominion the band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force has raised more than £lOO,OOO for patriotic purposes. This information was given by Leading Aircraftman J. J. Ferguson, a representative of the band, when he was discussing the proposed visit of the band to Gore next Thursday, with members of the Gore citizens’ committee last night. Leading Aircraftman Ferguson said that the band’s main tasks on this tour were to raise money for patriotic funds and to stimulate interest in recruiting for the Air Training Corps. The band was playing a big part in patriotic work and on the average the present tour was proving even more successful than previous tours, he said. Arrangements for the band’s visit were completed. The band will arrive at Gore on Thursday morning by the express at 8.10 o’clock from Invercargill and the bandsmen will meet their hosts at the Gore R.S.A. club rooms after leaving the train. It was decided to ask the business people to close their premises between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. It was also decided that during the demonstration in the street in the afternoon a collection for the patriotic funds and a recruiting appeal for the Air Training Corps would be made. PATRIOTIC FUNDS.— The Eastern Southland Zone Patriotic Committee reports tha'c amounts received by it for the financial year ended September 30 totalled £12,469 14/6. Tins amount is £340/5/6 short of the district’s quota. This is considered very satisfactory and should compare favourably with amounts raised in other parts of the Dominion. The district list is as follows;—Gore, £4434/5/7; Balfour, £llB3 1/-; Waikaka, £924/13/5; Mataura, £917 1/7; Waikaia, £761/8/7; Riversdale, £697 9/8; Fukerau-Kaiwera, £691/10/10; Wendon, £544/8/-; Knapdale, £427/11/6; Otama, £383/0/9; Waimumu, £364/5/-; Waikaka Valley, £352/16/4; Charlton, £314 6/8; Mandeville, £258/2/9; Brydone, £215 12/10; total, £12,469/14/6. TRAFFIC BRlDGE.— Yesterday a start was made with the work of repairing the Gore traffic bridge. It was the intention of the Public Works Department to convert the bridge into a one-way structure until after the war, when a new one would be built, but as a result of strong representations it was decided to repair the bridge so that it would last for at least another 10 years. The contractors will renew the
trusses right through the structure. The task is a difficult one, and it is the intention of the contractors to assemble each truss separately alongside the one it will replace. While this work is being carried out there will be some intereference with traffic. LAWN TENNIS.—A statement that although the club had been facing many difficulties during the last season it had held its own and had finished the year with a credit balance of £l3 was made by Mr L. O. Wallis at the annual meeting of the St. Andrew’s Tennis Club. There was a large attendance at the meeting and Mr Wallis was chairman. The following office-bearers were elected: Patron, the Rev. F. B. Barton; president, Mr L. O. Wallis, vice-presidents, Messrs Walter Gee, J. Wylie, S. Preece, A. Mitchell, J. A. S. Aitken, J. A. Brown, J. Lindsay, D. Russell, Mesdames J. A. Brown, J. A. S. Aitken and T. L. Macdonald; secretary, Mrs I. Shand; treasurer, Miss Doris Weir; committee, Mrs A. McKinlay, Misses C. Williamson and D. Smith, Messrs G. L. Gardyne, O. Thompson, and H. Rillstone; club captains, Mrs McKinlay and Mr G. L. Gardyne. It was decided to make a recommendation to the Eastern Southland Lawn Tennis Sub-Association that the affiliation fees be reduced from 2/6 a member to 6d, the sum of 2d to go to the Southland Lawn Tennis Association. It was stated that there would probably not be any competitions during the coming year and that the sub-associa-tion would not be faced with any expenditure. Opening day was fixed for October 17.
