ACUTE POSITION ON SHEEP FARMS
Shortage Of Shearers (P.A.) AUCKLAND, October 7. The position on sheep farms is so acute that unless rapid action is taken by the Government the wool industry is likely to face a major crisis this season, said a number of Auckland men prominently connected with the industry today. The new season’s wool which has arrived in Auckland is well below the usual quantity, and while the recent wet weather is one factor the principal cause is said to be a shortage of shearers. If the clip is to be handled expeditiously it is contended that it will be necessary to release from the military camps all shearers for as long as possible. “We are having the greatest difficulty in getting men released by the appeal boards,” said the farming spokesman. “The situation is complicated by the fact that many shearers have gone overseas.” The spokesman stated that on one North Auckland holding only one man was available to shear 60,000 sheep, and his neighbours were in almost as difficult a position.
