SERGEANT DIES OF INJURIES
PREMATURE EXPLOSION (P.A.) BLENHEIM, October 7. A non-commissioned officer was fatally injured and an officer seriously wounded by an accidental explosion. The victims were: — DIED OF INJURIES Sergeant James Reginald Pepper, aged 20; parents, Mr and Mrs R. Pepper, Idris road, Christchurch. INJURED 2nd Lieutenant John Graham Cookson, Dunedin. Pepper and Cookson were engaged in preparing an explosive charge for the purposes of a demonstration to a party of troops. They were alone at the time. It is not known exactly what happened to cause the detonator to explode. Both men received extensive internal injuries from which Pepper expired a few hours later. Cookson was removed to Wairau hospital and his condition is reported to be satisfactory. A civil inquest was adjourned after evidence of identification had been given. An Army board of inquiry was held this afternoon.
