ARMY CRICKET TEAMS
Need For Material Provided the necessary material is available two teams from the recruit training depot will be entered for the competitions of the Southland Cricket Association this season. The management committee of the association at its meeting last night appointed Messrs G. Agnew and J. C. Scandrett to interview Mr P. L. Hodge, chairman of the Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, to see if cricket material for the teams could be provided out of the patriotic fund. A letter from the camp commandant of the recruit training depot stated that there would be no objection to the entry of two teams from the depot provided the necessary equipment was available. If depot teams were to play against outside clubs there would be no equipment left for recreational training which would take place at the same time. As there were no doubt many clubs not at present using their material it might be possible for it to be lent to the depot. He understood that there were a number of country clubs with spare material. If the association could assist in this respect it would make it easier for the depot to enter teams in the competitions. The chairman, Mr G. Agnew, said that he doubted whether any club would be willing to lend material because cricket material did not last, but it might be possible to get material through the patriotic fund as had been done in other sports. Mr J. C. Scandrett said it might be possible to buy material from some country clubs which were at present not active. Mr W. T. Baker said he did not think it was fair to ask country clubs to sell their material. It was being kept for the future use of club members who were at the war. The material could be got through the patriotic fund.
