NEW ZEALAND CREW
Bomber Ferried To Egypt (Special Correspondent, N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, September 2. Sergeant-Pilot L. C. Webster, of Auckland, has returned to England after ferrying a Wellington bomber to Egypt. He was the second pilot. It was an all New Zealand crew. The others were Sergeants Fiesst and J. D. Henderson (address not stated). Powell, (Taihape), J. Henry (Wellington) and V. Brooks (Christchurch). They reached Egypt from England in 23 hours’ flying time, but remained some time in Malta at the time when 57 German planes were shot down in one day. Sergeant-Pilot Webster said: “We were underground more than on the top that day, but we still managed to see many marvellous dog-fights.” Sergeant-Pilot Webster visited the New Zealand Army Base Camp in Egypt before returning via Cape Town, I where he spent a fortnight. “It was a I great trip,” he said. |
