MOCK BATTLE HELD AT WAIPAHI

Lessons of great value were learned during combined operational manoevures between armoured fighting vehicles and a Home Guard battalion in the Waipahi district. Defensive positions were taken up by the Tapanui battalion of the Home Guard, which was attacked by an armoured fighting vehicle unit. The exercises demonstrated the ability of armoured vehicles to outflank infantry and cut off their line of retreat. Aeroplanes co-operated with the Home Guard battalion and picked up concentrations of armoured vehicles and dispersed them. The manoeuvres ended with the capture of Waipahi township by the armoured unit and the splitting of the defenders into two sections, one withdrawing through Waipahi towards Pukerau and the other retreating through Waipahi along the Tapanui road. The signal sections of both sides gained valuable experience, and the medical platoons of the Home Guard were able to give a considerable amount of first aid.
