MINERS STOP WORK
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, September 3. Questioned today about a stoppage of work at the Pukemiro mine, Waikato, the Minister of Labour, the the Hon. P. C. Webb, said no notice had been given and the miners’ action was a breach of their own agreement and a violation of the law and the rules of their own federation. Mr Webb added that it was totally unjustified, especially in view of the present serious war situation. Any grievances the men had could have been ventilated before the National Disputes Council. He advised the men to return forthwith. The law would be upheld and it would be in his own interest, as well as that of the country, if they followed that instruction. It was a pity that the miners should be responsible for creating a wrong impression so far as miners generally were concerned.
