MEN FOR FARM WORK
Release From Army Approved (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, September 2. The War Cabinet has promised that the services of 800 men-will be made available to the dairy industry in New Zealand to meet the present shortage of labour, according to information received today from the president of the Taranaki Dairying and Farming Industrial Union of Employers, Mr W. E. Scott, who is also a member of the Dairy Board. Mr Scott made representations about dairy factory labour difficulties to certain ministers of the Crown, and today interviewed the War. Cabinet.’ The War Cabinet has promised to make Taranaki’s requirements available immediately, and has promised to arrange for the release from military camps of the men applied for. Advice that the Government had approved release from the Army of shearers, musterers, experienced shed hands and shearers’ cooks for a period of approximately 12 weeks for shearing was received by the North Canterbury District Council of Primary Production in a letter from the Director of Primary Production, says a message from Christchurch. The letter stated also that district man-power officers had been instructed to release 52 men from essential industries for shearing. In all cases, except where their work was of exceptional urgency, no men were to be released from overseas units, and in the case of men in key positions the Army was to have adequate time to effect replacements, one month being suggested. , . . ... The procedure for obtaining the release of men was outlined in the letter. The worker himself, or a farmer, or a trade union secretary on behalf of a specified worker, will lodge his application for release from . the Army with the secretary of a Primary Production Council together with all the available particulars. The council will consider the application without delay, havihg regard to the adequacy of the run of work arranged by the applicant on his own behalf or to the run of work which can be arranged for the applicant.
