ARMED FORCES APPEAL BOARD
FIRST SITTING IN CITY The Southland Armed Forces Appeal Board will hold its first public sitting in Invercargill today. Previously the board was the Southland Man-Power Committee and as such was empowered to deal only with the appeals of men called up for territorial service, the appeals of those called for overseas service being dealt with by No. 6 Armed Forces Appeal Board under the chairmanship of Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M. However, before the names of the men drawn in the last ballot were published on June 25, it was announced that all men graded one and two by the doctors would be liable for general service. The status of the ManPower Committee was therefore raised to enable it to deal with the appeals of men who might be called on for overseas service. This change has not however involved a change in personnel. Mr E. H. Murney is still chairman and associated with him are Messrs D. H. Cockbum, D. W. Stalker and J. W. Hinchey (secretary). The board is not entitled to deal with the appeals of conscientious objectors. These will be referred to No. 6 Armed Forces Appeal Board.
