AUGUST WEATHER FAVOURABLE
GOOD SPRING MONTH Except for a short spell of stormy weather towards the end of the month, August was a favourable spring month in Invercargill. It ended yesterday with calm and warm weather, promising a good growing season. For the first time for several months the rainfall was above the average, 3.56 inches being recorded compared with an Invercargill average of 3.25 inches. About half the total fall occurred between August 22 and 25 during the stormy period, and the only other considerable fall was on August 1, which was a particularly cold and wet day, with a rainfall of almost three-quarters of an inch. The rainfall for the first eight months of 1942 was 27.98 inches. The wettest month of the year so far was January with 5.01 inches, and the only other months of high rainfall were March, April and May, in each of which more than four inches were recorded. An indication of the longer days and the improved weather was provided by the sunshine, which reached a total of 128 hours compared with 97 hours in July. Towards the end of the month up to eight hours of sunshine were recorded on individual days. Temperatures were mild during the greater part of the month. There were some light frosts. The wind blew from a northerly quarter to a greater extent than usual and there was little of the southerly weather which tends to damage gardens so much.
