DAY WITHOUT MEAT

MR ROOSEVELT’S PROPOSALS (Rec. 1.5 a.m.) WASHINGTON, August 29. President Roosevelt said today that the Government was considering instituting one meatless day each week. This would enable the shipping of most of the meat for the United Nations’ soldiers from the United States, instead of Australia and South America. The plan would make between 30 and 40 Allied ships available to haul war necessities throughout the world to the war theatre where they would be vitally needed. Mr Roosevelt said the Government was considering instituting the meatless day each week in addition to Friday, which Catholics already observed. He said the 30 or 40 cargo ships which could be released were now transporting meat from Australia, New Zealand and the Argentine. These

could be diverted to the transportation of tanks, planes and munitions if meatless days were instituted. Asked if this would have any illeffect on the economy of Australia and New Zealand, Mr Roosevelt replied in the negative. He explained that he had discussed with Mr Fraser methods which might be employed in bringing food supplies. At present many ships carrying military supplies to Australia and New Zealand might bring back a larger amount of food or, alternatively, more food might be stored.
