PILOT ESCAPES BY PARACHUTE
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 30. An airman pilot under training at a South Island Royal New Zealand Air Force station escaped by parachute when his aircraft got into difficulties near the aerodrome about noon today. He was engaged in solo flying practice and jumped from a height of about 2000 feet, escaping with a sprained ankle. MAN FRACTURES LEG James Gordon Ward, of 22 Railway Esplanade, East Gore, was admitted to the Gore Public Hospital on Saturday afternoon suffering from a fractured leg. Ward was wheeling a bicycle in Main street about 4 o’clock on Saturday afternoon when he had a collision with another cyclist. In falling on the roadway Ward broke his right leg. His condition last night was reported to be satisfactory. Ward is a returned soldier from the present war, being invalided home some months ago, _ and since his return he has been receiving treatment at the hospital.
