RIVERTON NEWS
HOME GUARD MATCH.— The Riverton Company met the Otautau Company of the Home Guard on the Riverton recreation ground on Saturday in a football match in aid of patriotic funds. It was a good cleanspirited game played in lovely weather and ended in Riverton winning by 3 points to nil. The teams were:— Otautau (blue): L. Black; G. Duff, V. Watkinson, A. Harrington; A. S. James, F. James; H. Cobb; J. Watkinson, R. Watt, E. Coomb, S. Matheson, J. Brick, C. C. MeDougall, S. Brash, C. Wilson. Riverton (green and white): E. Lee, G. Cleaver, J. Cleaver, S. Habgood; C. Smith, K. Walker; A. Haywood; T. Dallas, C. Buxton, W. Rose, S. Eade, K. Foster, K. Stick, M. Anderson, C. Livingstone. Captain A. N. McDonald, the former Southland representative and officer commanding of the Wyndham Company of the Home Guard, was the referee. Major L. R. Austin, officer commanding Riverton Battalion, kicked off. The game was played in four spells, Riverton winning the toss. S. Eade scored a try in the third spell for Riverton, which maintained its lead to the final whistle. Nearly £lO was raised for the fund. COMMUNITY SING.—An enjoyable community sing and dance was held on Friday in Fleck’s Hall in aid of patriotic funds. Mr J. Moss was song leader and Mr G. H. Wilkes was the auctioneer. The nurses’ choir of the Riverton Hospital contributed to the performance. A sum of £l5 was raised.
