Sporting ARAVANE AGAIN IN HAND

HORSES TRAINED ON GORE TRACK Aravane, who won seven races and over £lOOO in stake money two seasons ago, win again be seen out on Southla ? d * raC w in tai season. The Weathervane-Lady mare, now eight years old, has been in after a spell and will take the place in J. R. Cochrane’s (Gore) stable vacated y Rosaleen Dhu, who has been retired to the matron’s paddock. Aravane was started only three times last season. She ran third in her first start (in the Waikaka Handicap at the Gore spring meeting), she was nnP^ ce in the Spring Handicap tile same meeting, and she was fourth in the Southland Cup won by Fidelis, also trained on the Gore track. The three-year-old half-brother by Fape Money to Aravane. Aramoney, will also do battle for the Cochrane stable this se “ oa ’ Aramoney is a colt who alr&dy has shown he possesses some of the racing qualities of his half-sister. He has had two starts so far, both at Riccarton this month. The others of Cochrane’s stable are Basnful Lady, winner of the Winter Cup, whose next appearance may be in the sprint at me Gore meeting next month, Susie, formerly trained by F. W. Ellis, who has engagements at the Otago Hunt meeting on Saturday, and three juveniles.

Miss Sal , . c . Miss Sal is a three-year-old filly by salmagundi from Waiau Maid, and Jonnara is the name of a four-year-old mare by ■Paper Money from a Songbird mare. The other juvenile is the three-year-old full sister to Last Effort (Man’s Pal-Night Effort). Mainly by the efforts of Aravane and Bashful Lady Cochrane has had two good seasons in the last two years and the prospects are that the material he has in hand this year will again bring his stable under the spotlight. He led in seven winners last Prize, the Paper Money-Red Treasure three-year-old, prepared by Cochrane for the McLean Stakes last season, is now in A. McKenzie’s Invercargill stable.

T. G. Pollock’s String T. G. Pollock, another Gore trainer, met with fair success last season. He turned out six winners, including the winner of the Southland Cup (Fidelis) and the winner of the Otago Hurdles (Phalanx). Amorlad. a promising novice now in A. McKay s Riverton stable, also wpn while in Pollock s stable last season. His other winner was Aina Rere Pollok will start the new season with Fidelis and Phalanx, both of whom have engagements at Wingatui on Saturday, and Jocanta (Myosotis-Half a Brace), a steeplechaser he brought back from the National meeting, and Cross Question, a three-year-old filly by Solicitor-General-Eulalie.

Fidelis Fidelis, now seven years old, had a fairly busy season last season. The son of Lord Quex and Catallnl raced consistently and won two races and was placed on three other occasions for £495 in stakes. He was also in fourth place several times.

Phalanx ' Phalanx also had a busy season, and after winning as a sprinter early in the season he surprised many by winning the Otago Hurdles pointlessly at his second start over hurdles. Phalanx has been an unreliable proposition, however. His form in the Otago Hurdles pointed to good things, but he has failed since and in three starts this month he failed to get into the money. He may race more generously on Saturday.

Cross Question Cross Question was started four times as a two-year-old and In her first start she distinguished herself by running third to Dominate and Retriever in the Spring Nurr sery Handicap. She was just headed for second money by a head. She was unplaced in her second start, but she showed ability above t v -' average In her next outing by running third In the Middle Park Plate, won by Egyptian Rose. She is bred well enough to win races and her racing in the south will be followed with interest. Trotting Cup It has been decided to fix the class for this year’s New Zealand Trotting Cup at 4.27 and make horses assessed at 4.28 and 4.29 eligible. The stake will be £2750. ,

Vincent Meeting It is reported that the Vincent Jockey Club has made an application to the Minister of Internal Affairs to hold its one-day fixture on January 9 on the Wingatui course. Alteration

The order of running on the card for the Dunedin spring meeting has been changed. The principal race, the Ranfurly Handicap, will be fourth, and the Telegraph Handicap seventh on the card. Valantua

Valantua was to have been an acceptor for the Hunt meeting, but unfortunately struck himself during a gallop last week. His presence in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase would have added Interest to the contest. McLean Stakes No fewer than 19 different sires are represented by the 32 two-year-olds engaged in the McLean Stakes to be run at the spmig meeting at Wlngatul. They are: Bulandshar 4, Theio and Man's Pal each 3, Kincardine, Wild Chase, Phaleron Bay, Irish Lancer, Siegfried and Foxbridge each 2, and Inflation, Lord Quex, Tiderace, Gynerium, Straightcourse, St. Boswells, Colonel Cygnus, Grey Honour, Salmagundi and Ringmaster one each.
