OBITUARY The death of Mr William Mawhinney, a well-known personality of the Mataura district. occurred at Gore recently. Mr Mawhinney was bom at Londonderry 68 years ago, being a son of the late Mr and Mrs Matthew Mawhinney. He came out to New Zealand in 1905. He first found employment in the Herlot district and he later moved to Dunedin, where he was.employed for a time by the National Mortgage and Agency Co. Ltd. About 1915 he went to the Mataura district, where he worked on his brother’s property. Mr Mawhinney did not marry and he is survived by his brother, Mr Thomas Mawhinney, of Ferndale. PERSONAL.—Lance-Corporal J. D. Shields, who has been spending a period of leave at Gore, was met by the Mayor, Mr W. D. Shelton, before his return to camp. Mr Shelton presented Lance-Corporal Shields with a cheque on behalf of the citizens of the town. Driver J. P. Holland, who returned to camp on Saturday morning after spending a period of leave in the town, was also met by the Mayor before his departure. The Mayor also presented Driver Holland with a cheque.
