DEDUCTION FROM WOOL VALUES

Invercargill woolbrokers have received instructions that in future 10 per cent, of the realizations from wool appraisals will be retained. In previous seasons 5 per cent, has been retained in case the average value fixed by appraisers should exceed the average of 12|d per lb previously paid by the British Government for New Zealand wool. Actually, the average of 12 id has not been exceeded and growers have each season received a bonus in addition to the 5 per cent, later in the season. No reason for the higher deduction has been given, but it may be the machinery for carrying out the policy announced some time ago by the Minister of Marketing (the Hon. J. G. Barclay) of retaining as a reserve fund a proportion of the increase of 15 per cent granted bv the United Kingdom. Farmers throughout New Zealand have protested against that policy.
