EMERGENCY FIREMEN AT CITY CALLS
Whether emergency fire service members should attend calls in the city was discussed by the Invercargill Fire Board yesterday. A letter was received from the secretary of the Invercargill Emergency Precautions Service (Mr C. R. Hart) stating that the suggestion of the Dominion Fire Controller that emergency fire service members should attend all fire calls in the city for experience had been approved. He requested that details of the cost payable by the E.P.S. be submitted. Mr A. Sharp expressed the opinion that if the E.P.S. executive realized how much the cost would be it would not approve of the scheme. The number of calls to actual fires, on the figures of the last few months, was small, amounting to about one a month and he doubt-
ed whether the expense involved would be warranted. It was decided to ask the superintendent to submit a report on the question, including the cost involved.
PRESENTATIONS TO TEACHERS.—On the eve of Mr W. Watson’s transfer from the Menzies Ferry school to Longbush and Miss Wilson’s transfer to Winton, the residents tendered them a social. Mr Watson has been headmaster of the Menzies Ferry School and Miss Wilson his assistant. Mary Walsh presented Miss Wilson with a bouquet, and Betty McGillivray, on behalf of the scholars, presented each with a fruit dish. Mr T. W. McGillivray said that both had not only taken a keen interest in the children, but had also taken an active part in the social activities of the district. He asked Miss Wilson to accept a toilet set and Mr Watson a silver teapot. Mr and Mrs H. Gibb and Mr A. Richardson also spoke.
