BRAZIL’S IMPORTANCE

New Possibilities Opened NEW YORK, August 25. ' American military experts agree that Brazil’s entry into the war opens entirely new and probably decisive strategic possibilities. Major Alexander P. Seversky says Brazil’s participation cannot be over- . estimated. Indeed it may become a , major element in the ultimate victory. Air power makes Natal and Pernambuco as vital as strategic points as Gibraltar, Suez or the Dardanelles, while because of the Brazilian Atlantic “bulge” Natal and Pernambuco control the South Atlantic gateway to world communications. This “bulge” makes direct aerial trans-Atlantic bombardment possible. Major Seversky concludes that a struggle for decisive control of the South Atlantic gateways is now inevitable—either the United Nations will dominate it from Natal or the Axis from T~)alcat*. Major George fielding Eliot, in The New York Herald Tribune emphasizes the importance of controlling the submarine menace and asserts that with Brazilian bases available for the Allies it will be possible to seal the narrow South Atlantic gateway and consequently check definitely the U-boat war.
