LORNEVILLE STOCK SALE

HIGHER PRICE FOR BEEF Both mutton and beef at the Lorneville stock sale yesterday were dearer than they were last week. Fat ewes showed an advance of up to 3/- a head, and the beef market opened at 20/- a head higher. FAT CATTLE.— OnIy a medium size entry, which included some extra good quality cattle of all classes, was forward. In the early stages of the sale values, compared with the previous week, were generally 20/- better and over the concluding stages there was a still further improvement. Extra good quality bullocks realized £2O 7/6, good quality £l6/10/- to £l7/10/-; mediumweights £l5 to £l5/15/-; lightweights £l3/5/- to £l4/12/-. Extra good heifers brought £l4/17/6; good quality mediumweights £l2/10/- to £l3/10/-; lightweights £lO/15/- to £l2 and small £B/15/to £9/15/-. Prime cows sold at up to £l3 15/-; good quality £ll/10/- to £l2/10/-; medium £lO to £lO/15/-; unfinished £8 5/-. to £9/5/-; aged and inferior £3/15/to £5/5/-. FAT SHEEP.— There was a smaller yarding, with about an equal number of wethers and ewes. Compared with last week, values for wethers were much the same. Ewes at the beginning of the sale were about 2/- a head better and at the end of the sale an improvement of about 3/was evident. Prime quality wethers sold at up to 43/-; good quality mediumweights 38/6 to 40/-; lightweights 35/6 to 37/6; prime young ewes to 33/-; prime quality 27/6 to 29/-; medium quality 24/6 to 26/and unfinished brought 18/- to 21/6. STORE CATTLE.—The entry in this section was smaller than last week’s. Some well-bred station cattle were forward and the market was, if anything, better than at recent sales. Three-year-old station bullocks made up to £l2 and two-year-olds to £9/5/-. A line of black-polled Hereford cross steer calves made £5/5/-. Hereford calves made to £4/12/- and mixed sex calves of indifferent breeding brought up to £4. There were no good empty cows offered. There was a large entry in the dairy section, the sale being quite a good one. Best guaranteed sorts sold at up to £lO/10/-; others £7 to £B/10/-; cows not guaranteed £4 to £6. An advertised dairy herd made from £8 to £ll and good two-year-old heifers made from £6 to £9. STORE SHEEP.— In the store sheep section the yarding was smaller, the bulk of the entry consisting of breeding ewes. There were no good ewe hoggets offered. Medium sorts sold at from 30/- to 34/-; wether hoggets realizing from 21/- to 25/3. Good four-shear ewes made up to 34/-; full-mouth ewes 25/- to 28/9; best conditioned failing mouth ewes up to 23/-; poorer conditioned and aged sorts 13/- to 16/-. A line Of stud Southdown ewes sold on account of the estate of the late Mr A. W, Pannett (Clinton) made from three guineas to five guineas. GORE STOCK SALE There was a heavy entry of cattle forward at the fortnightly Gore stock sale yesterday when high prices were secured for fats in particular. Top price was obtained for four fat bullocks in prime condition offered on account of Mr C. H. W. Tripp (Otaraia), these being disposed of at £lB/17/6. Other good prices were £l7/17/6, £l7/15/-, £l7/7/6, £l7/5/-, £l6/17/6 and £l6/7/6. Bullocks in poorer condition brought down to £lO/15/-. Fat cows found buyers at from £5/5/- up to £l2/15/-, and fat heifers made about £5/17/6. Dairy cows realized from £4 down to £3/17/6. Fat wethers were again sought after and up to 42/3 was paid, this price being secured for a line offered on account of McDonald Bros. (Ferndale). Other sorts sold at 42/-, 41/-, 40/- down to 39/-. Fat ewes were also in demand and one line brought up to 32/-, other sorts bringing 31/-, 30/- down to 22/- for sheep in poorer condition. A line of ewe hoggets brought 35/-.
