SOLDIERS’ WORK ON WHARVES
Payment Of Wages The question of the payment of wages to soldiers for voluntary work done on the wharves during rush periods was discussed at a meeting of the Southland Trades Council on Saturday evening. The secretary (Mr D. W. Stalker) reported that he had interviewed the Minister of Defence on the subject. Full award wages had been paid by the shipping companies, and it was understood that the money would be paid into either the regimental or the canteen funds. Mr Stalker also -reported on a meeting of the Industrial Emergency Council held in • Wellington to discuss the question of the guaranteed wage in essential industries. He said it was hoped that a final settlement of this question would be reached within the next two weeks.
It was agreed that the council should sponsor a “comforts coupon” advertisement in the morning and evening newspapers. A grant of £l/1/- was made to the Makogai lepers’ fund. It was agreed that when delegates to the council missed three meetings without an apology the affiliated bodies which they represented should be notified.
Mr D. Harris presided at the meeting and there was a good attendance of delegates.
