The Mayor, Mr A. Wachner, and the town clerk, Mr W. F. Sturman, who spent the week-end at Stewart Island, were unable to return yesterday as arranged because the rough weather made a crossing by the steamer impossible. It is probable that the steamer will not be able to make the trip until tomorrow. Mr J. Meltzer, secretary of the New Zealand Police Association, is at present visiting Invercargill on departmental business. Mr L. E. Richdale, the well-known Dunedin ornithologist, is visiting Invercargill and is staying at Deschler’s hotel. He hopes to travel to Stewart Island today or tomorrow and to begin the work of destroying the cats which are inflicting such heavy damage on native bird life on Herekopare Island. Mr F. W. Bailey, postmaster at Queenstown, began annual leave yesterday. Mr H. D. Walker will carry out his d -'ies during his absence. Mr James Simpson will travel to Dunedin by the express this morning to fulfil an engagement next Saturday with the National Broadcasting Service. ‘Mr E. T. Silverwood, postmaster at Otautau, resumed duty yesterday after sick leave. Final arrangements for the visit to the city of Mr G. A. Hayden, secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board, were made at a meeting of the publicity sub-committee of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council yesterday. Mr Hayden will attend a meeting of the council on Thursday afternoon and in the evenng he wll address a public meeting in the Civic Theatre.
