OLD BOYS BEATS ARMY

WIN FOR PIRATES-STAR

Little interest was shown in the penultimate series of games in the Fleming Shield Rugby competition at Rugby Park on Saturday afternoon. Playing conidtions were fair after the heavy rain of Friday. There was a small attendance of spectators. Old Boys-Invercargill, reinforced by F. Stewart and L. Hillis, both of whom recently returned on leave from Suva, had little difficulty in accounting for a weakened Army team by 24 points to six. The Army forwards packed well and got more than an equal share of the ball from the scrums, but they were outmatched by the Old Boys’ backs, who threw the ball about freely and used 'superior pace to score tries. Stewart opened the scoring for Old Boys and Gilbertson converted. This was followed by tries by Hamilton and Sutton, both being converted by Gilbertson, whose kicking was a feature of the play. The scores at half-time were Old Boys 15, Army 3. Blakie increased Old Boys' total with a try following a good run up the left wing. An Army back mis-kicked and in the scramble for the ball when it went over the line Blaikie again scored. Old Boys 21, Army 3. Army forwards put in some good work and after clever passing Renshaw scored a good try. Old Boys 21, Army 6. Watson was the next to score for Old Boys. He gauged the wind cleverly and kicked a good penalty goal. The final scores were:— Old Boys 24, Army 6. Mr J. Murray was referee. The teams were:— OLD BOYS.—Watson: Hamilton, Hillis, Blakie; Marr, Stewart; Walker; Withington, Mclnerney, Redpath, Gilbertson, Green, Sutton, Kellas, Dunn. ARMY.—Crosbie; McKnlay, Thomson.
