BASKETBALL ' BATA DEFEATS STUARTS

Only two first-grade basketball matches were played on Saturday, High School having defaulted to Collegiate. At a meeting of the Southland Basketball Union on Tuesday evening, the advisability of extending the first-grade competition will be discussed. The match between Rata and Stuarts lacked interest and was one-sided. Rata was far superior to Stuarts in every department of the game. Alwyn Pittaway and Vera Fraser were as usual the two leading players in the Rata team. Stuarts poor exhibition may have been explained by the fact that Elsie Ingram and Maisie Thomas have left the team and that it was necessary to play comparatively inexperienced players in their places, The final score was: Rata 25, Stuarts 5. The game between St. Mary’s and Makarewa was slow and lacked dash although the teams were evenly matched. Although St. Mary’s attacks did not play well in the first half, Makarewa led by only one goal at half-time. In the second half play became slightly faster and the score for both teams mounted steadily. The final score was St. Mary’s 17, Makarewa 17. The results of other games played during the afternoon were as follows:— Second Grade.—Collegiate B beat Rata 16-9. Woodlands beat St. Mary’s 30-8. Technical beat Collegiate A 17-13.
