Sporting ROYAL LANCER’S WINNINGS

BLACK GLOBE ARRIVES IN SOUTHLAND Royal Lancer, who is not likely to be raced this season until the Gore meeting, was started six times last season for one placing, a win in the Easter Handclap at Riverton. In three seasons’ racing he has won £2485 in stakes for his owner. Mr W. Swale. Royal Lancer holds the weight-carrying record of 9.9 for the Fiord mile, run at the Riverton meeting. In his first race last season, in the Islington Handicap at the Grand National meeting he failed under 9.12.

Black Globe The Australian trotting sire, Black Globe, arrived in New Zealand last week and was taken to his new home in Mataura Island on Thursday. For Southland Mr A. Cundall, of Invercargill, purchased the Paper Money-Wanaka filly, sold at the National Sale of blood stock at Christchurch for 130gns. Otago Hunt Acceptances Acceptances for the Otago Hunt meeting on September 5 close on Thursday.

Iceland Spar Iceland Spar has again been put aside and will be spelled for about a year. Retriever is another of F. D. Jones's team which has been put on the spelling list. Grilse To Race Again Grilse, winner of two races, including the Welcome Stakes, in three starts last season, has been put into training again. This filly was reported to have been retired from racing because of unsoundness.

Costly The disqualification of Heidelberg for short-weight last Saturday meant a loss of nearly £lOOO to his owner when the stakes and wagers are taken into account, states The Evening Star. A Coup It is reported that the connections behind Prince Shad collected one of the largest cheques for dividends ever paid out by the Canterbury Jockey Club when that horse won the Summer Handicap at Riccarton.

Weight . When Anglo-French won the Lincoln Steeplechase he carried 9.2, and if started in the Otago Hunt Steeples next month will have an additional 421 b to carry, and is handicapped to meet Gay Boa on 181 b worse terms. In the Lincoln Steeplechase Slayer gave Anglo-French 361 b. It would have been Interesting to know what Slayer's impost would have been in the Wingatui .race had he been nominated. Integrity The four-year-old colt Integrity, who won at Forbury Park on Saturday, started 11 times last season. After putting up four unplaced performances, he went 2min 46 3-ssec when second to Knapdale Lass, who won the Riccarton Stakes in 2min 45 2-ssec. In his next race Integrity went 3min 20sec in the New Zealand Derby Stakes, won by Pacing Power in 3min 19 4-ssec. At Hororata he was second in 3min 30 2-ssec, and in his next start he won a maiden at Addington in 3min 22 4-ssec.

Spiral Spiral, the winner of the Australian Steeplechase, was a rank outsider, and was scarcely mentioned in the betting. Spiral has been racing for six seasons for four wins, and his previous win was in a hurdle race run in January 1941. A Fine Trotter

Royal Worthy, the most improved trotter raced in New Zealand last year, has been nominated for the Stewards’ Handicap at the next meeting at Addington. He is assessed on 4min 37sec for two miles, a handy mark in a 4min 40sec class. Profit

The patriotic trotting meeting held at Addington last month resulted in a profit of £1415/18/-, and a cheque for that amount has been handed over. The Hon. H. T. Armstrong, acting for the Minister of Internal Affairs, has advised the secretary for the meeting that the Government would grant a subsidy of £ for £ on the profits of the fixture.

Returning To Form Gladynev is returning to form. He was not well placed in the straight in the Islington Handicap on Saturday, but he finished very well and was a close third when the line was reached. From now on he should be harder to beat.

Poor Jumping If anything more were needed to impress on the racing public how poor the crosscountry horses were during the winter, the Lincoln Steeplechase should have done it, comments a northern writer. It should also serve to draw to the attention of owners and prospective owners the possibilities there are of winning money with a good juniper. Not Up To It Cherry Plum’s trip south demonstrated the fact that at present he is not equal to Grand National requirements. He was done with a long way from home in the Lincoln Steeplechase on Saturday and finished well back.

Battledrcss Battledress continues to work pleasingly at Hawera. He has been entered for the Halcombe Memorial Handicap (nine furlongs) at the Combined Hunt Club’s meeting on August 29. Mare’s Death

It is possible that one of our recent expensive earthquakes was responsible for the death of the good brood mare Hinearoha. On the day following one of the shakes Hinearoha was found in her paddock with a leg broken. Horses are sensible of the approach of earthquakes and become very excited. It is thought that Hinearoha must have been gallopiqg about in a frightened condition when the fracture occurred. She was destroyed.
