BARLEY IMPORTS
Sir, —An article in The Southland Times on August 17, under the headingj “Barley and Oranges from Australia,’ looked innocent enough, and in fact I nearly passed it by. The Hon. J. G. Barclay has done a good job in securing 41,000 cases of oranges, but he has done a very bad job with his purchase of 100,000 sacks of barley for pig and fowl feed. There are thousands of sacks of oats in store and still thousands of bushels to be threshed, and the farmers of Southland cannot quit them. No doubt some are not the best, but if pigs and hens are to be fed on first quality when shipping is scarce I think it is time the farmers or the Farmers’ Union had a look at themselves. Perhaps the president of the Farmers’ Union could tell us what his branch has done to help the oat growers of Southland sell their present stocks. If we dairy farmers are not careful we will find butter and cheese being brought into New Zealand. A. C. PARK. August 16, 1942.
