RABBIT PEST
Sir,—“Old Soldier” has me thinking this time, wondering in what part of our fertile province his Utopia is situated and what wonderful neighbours he has. Recently an attempt was made to form a rabbit board area south of Gore, and including the Waimumu block. Quite a number of the farmers in that area said they hadn’t a rabbit bn their farms, but when the price of rabbit skins soared about 15 months ago it was surprising how many had kills of 200, 300 and 400. I came to Southland 40 years ago and during that time have travelled over most of the province, but with the exception of rabbit board areas I cannot think of anywhere where rabbits are extinct.
The fact that “Old Soldier” expresses surprise that I should have to fumigate again this year after having done so last year just bears out what I inferred in my first letter, that what he doesn’t know about rabbit control would fill a book. Unfortunately we haven’t a rabbit board in this district, but if we had I wouldn’t mind giving the rabbiter a hand, as well as paying 4d an acre. To Mr Murchison I would say I’m not against winter trapping, poisoning, dogging or anything that will clean up the pest, but the man who. does this and then says, “Soul, take thine ease” for the other nine months, is liable to lose a considerable portion of his turnip and oat crops.
