LIGHTING IN INLAND AREAS

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 21. A definition of coastal areas for each county within which th-* requirements of the lighting regulations will remain more or less as they are at present is contained in the Lighting Restriction Orders 1942 which have been gazetted. The Minister of Civil Defence, the Hon. W. A. Bodkin, referring to these orders, said that outside these districts the restrictions in certain classes of exterior lighting were litfed to some extentThe orders, which were in the main consolidation and revision of instructions which had been issued from time to time by the Dominion Lighting Controller, were divided into several parts, each dealing with special classes of lights in each part, said the Minister. The orders regulated the degree of lighting and the use of lights for all areas and purposes. One dealt with lighting for roads and streets, and the application of this order should result in a very considerable improvement in street lighting in inland towns and some improvement in many towns in the coastal area. In districts such as Wairarapa, Pahiatua, Taumarunui, Matamata and in almost all inland counties in the South Island, it should be quite possible for street lighting to revert to somewhere near pre-war values.
