MAGISTRATES COURT

THURSDAY (Before Mr R. C. Abernethy. S.M.) John Henry, alias Alex Stewart, a labourer, pleaded guilty to two charges df theft of money and he was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to run concurrently. On a charge of obtaining credit by fraud he was remanded to appear at Christchurch. Chief Detective Thompson said that the accused took advantage of the hospitality of an elderly woman in a country district and stole money from the house. The woman had given him lodgings and that was the way he showed his appreciation. He also stole money from a farm house at Sutton. The Magistrate commented that the accused’s action was mean and despicable. Judgment by default was given for the plaintiffs in the following cases:—W. M. Clare v. Hodge, Jun., for lOd, costs 6/-; OtataraWallacetown Rabbit Board v. John Harvey and Francis Maud Harvey (Collingwood), for £l/6/8, costs £l/1/-; Macalisters Limited, v. J. E. Hansen (Kapuka), for £2/10/4, costs £2/1/6; Broad. Small Limited v. T. O’Donnell (Te Tua), for 17/- costs: Rogert Ure v. Alexander Wright, lor £4/11/5, costs £4 1/6. C. E. Selby (Mokotua) was ordered to pay Moffett and Co. Limited £1 in default one day’s imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended if he pays 10/- a week.
