CERTIFICATES SUGGESTED AS PRIZES

A suggestion that because of the present high cost and short supply of suitable books, certificates should be presented instead of books as prizes to class leaders at the end of the year was made by Mr C. A. Stewart, principal of the Southland Technical College, in a report presented to the Board of Managers last night. Mr Stewart added that so far as he could judge this would involve little hardship for the booksellers. Mr Stewart also suggested that it might be advisable to hold the annual break-up ceremony in the school hall this year instead of at the Civic Theatre. He said that.the recent renovation made the hall much more attractive than it used to be, and the number of pupils to be accommodated was smaller than it had been in the last two or three years. In reply to a question Mr Stewart said that in the past the Technical College had held its break-up in the Civic Theatre in the afternoon and the High Schools had held theirs in the evening, the cost being shared between the two boards. It was decided that before a decision was reached, either on the form of the school prizes or the venue of the breakup, the chairman, Mr J. H. Reed, and Mr Stewart should confer with the High Schools’ Board.
