LAUNDRY WORK AT HOSPITAL

The rapid increase in the amount of work handled at the laundry at the Kew hospital was emphasized at a meeting of the Southland Hospital Board yesterday by the secretary in a report. He stated that when the laundry was established private contractors had been handling 8000 articles each week for the board. That was two years ago. For each of the last four months the number of articles handled had been a record. Last month 61,000 articles had been laundered, an increase of 50 per cent, on the number two years ago. At full capacity the laundry could handle 50 per cent, more artciles, but shift work would be required. If the Kew hospital were enlarged to accommodate 300 patients the laundry could still handle all the washing for all institutions. Sketch plans for enlarging Kew hospital had been sent to the Health Department.
