TECHNICAL COLLEGE CLASSES
INCONVENIENCE CAUSED BY RECENT FIRE “The damage to buildings and equipment by the recent fire in the workshops is causing considerable inconvenience and crowding. The senior engineering and yzoodwork shops are at times unduly crowded, and some classes have to be transferred to unsuitable quarters. On the whole, however, we are managing reasonably well, both In day school and In evening school,” stated the principal of the Southland Technical College, Mr C. A. Stewart, in a report on the recent fire at the college presented to the Board of Managers last night. The report added: “I should express my appreciation of the fine work done at the time and immediately afterwards by members of the Fire Brigade. They did remarkably well in confining the fire as they did, in covering equipment to save it from water damage, and in afterwards getting rid of water and sawdust. The electricity department of the City Council also did its best to expedite refitting, and in all ways was considerate and showed a pleasing absence of red tape. One or two evening school instructors and a number of evening school students spent many hours in voluntary salvage work. At least one merchant engineering firm came forward with a prompt offer of all assistance in its power in the matter of lost equipment. All this help and goodwill is deeply appreciated.” Reporting on behalf of the visiting committee, Mr H. C. Gimblett said it was hoped that when the new building was erected it would embody the latest safeguards against fire.
