LINEN FLAX RETURNS

(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 19. Of a total of 20,202 acres in the 1941-42 linen flax contract, 1G.772 acres were accepted for long fibre, or first-quality product, representing 83 per cent, of the total prop compared with 67 per cent, in 1940-41. These figures were announced by Mr J. W. Hadfield, director of the linen flax section of the Industries and Commerce Department. But for unfavourable returns from Woodlands, where the crop was damaged by hail, and Oxford and Leeston, where the crops were adversely affected by the dry spring, the returns would have been much higher. Some districts had extraordinary results, Balclutha’s entire acres being accepted for long fibre. Geraldine had 99.36 per cent, accepted and Makikihi 99 per cent.
