SOLDIERS’ PLOTS AT CEMETERY

All available sections in the Soldiers’ Avenue, on the main drive at the Eastern Cemetery, are now occupied and a start has been made with interments in that part of the new extension set aside for soldiers graves, reported the officer in charge. of reserves, Mr W. Stapleton, at the meeting of the City Council last night. \ . Mr Stapleton added that he had been in communication with Mr Sutton of the Public Works Department, who had just had completed, through the War Graves Department, a system of concrete bases and masonry work for the Gore cemetery authorities. It was intended to submit measurements of the new Soldiers’ Avenue to Mr Sutton who had agreed to prepare a plan, with a few minor improvements, similar to that at Gore. The Reserves Committee reported that it intended to inspect the new Soldiers’ Avenue on August 31. ' t DEARER BURIALS

The committee also reported that a new award covering cemetery workers, which came into force on April 6, had increased the cost of burials, particularly week-end interments. The committee had the matter under consideration. Cr J. Pickard, chairman of the committee, said that the award affected burials on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, because of the overtime rate.
